Boat licence test exemptions

You do not have to pass a boat theory test if you have:
  • an interstate licence to operate a motor boat, or
  • a certificate of competency such as a coxswain, master or mate issued by a state or federal marine authority

that is current, or has been expired for less than six months.

You are also exempt if you have obtained one of the following qualifications by examination during the past six months: 

  • Australian Volunteer Coastguard (Basic Seamanship Certificate)
  • Yachting Australia – Certificate of Competence in the National Powerboat Scheme (formerly Australian Yachting Federation Boat Handling Certificate TL3)
  • Yachting Australia – Certificate of Competence in the National Yacht Cruising Scheme (formerly Australian Yachting Federation Inshore Seamanship Course TL4)
  • Yachting Australia – Certificate of Competence in the National Motor Cruising Scheme (formerly Australian Yachting Federation Motor Cruising Certificate TL5)
  • South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron (Certificate of Completion of Seamanship course)
  • Small Craft Proficiency Certificate (BoatSmart) issued by the Government of Western Australia
  • Australian Boating College (SABL1-Motor Boat Licence Course)
  • WEA Basic Boating Course (completed after 1 January 2009)
  • Boating Licence Course.
